Highlights of ACWC January Meeting
The Advocacy Committee for Women’s Concerns met at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, Ky., January 24-26, 2008. ACWC had a full agenda, as this was the committee’s final meeting before the 218th General Assembly to be held in San Jose, California, this summer.
- ACWC met jointly with the Advocacy Committee for Racial Ethnic Concerns and the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy in two sessions, which included:
- A discussion with Cliff Kirkpatrick regarding upcoming General Assembly and celebration of his service to the denomination as Stated Clerk, and
- Reviewing reports and resolutions for General Assembly.
- Work Groups formulated recommendations for the ACWC report to General Assembly regarding:
- Immigration Detention,
- Trafficking of women, and
- Request to begin process for extensive research project on women in the PC(USA).
- The committee welcomed newly appointed ACWC members, Gay Byron and Belinda Rice, to fill vacancies.
- Adeline DeCastro was elected co-chair to fill the completed term of Sarah Colwill.
- The committee recognized outgoing elected members Karen Breckenridge, Nancy Neal and Manley Olsen (GAC), and liaison Rebecca Harrison (NAPC)
- Participated in Center-wide worship celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
