The choice of music both for congregation and for choir during the Christmas “cycle” is profoundly important if we are going to get the “whole” story. Pastor and musician should begin by reading together in one sitting all of the lectionary texts from the beginning of Advent through Epiphany — yes, Epiphany, the oldest part of the Christmas tradition and the end of the Advent-Christmas cycle. One quickly discovers how impoverished our celebrations have become when held up against the grand scope of the readings. Learn more.
Frequently over the season of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany we find ourselves singing or caroling with others. Enjoy some of the songs we all love to sing — download this pdf file to print and share. It can be folded into a booklet. All the songs are in public domain.

Eucharistic Prayers for Advent, Year C
These brief eucharistic prayers are drawn from the themes and imagery of the lectionary texts for the season of Advent, Year C. Note that there are four options in each of the three sections that make up the body of the prayer; these are to be used as indicated on the appropriate Sunday in Advent. In this format, the Words of Institution should be used at the Invitation to the Table or the Breaking of the Bread.

Readings for Lighting the Advent Candles
The Presbyterian Book of Common Worship provides a sequence of readings from the prophet Isaiah for use during the lighting of the Advent candles. This adaptation of that resource suggests a division of parts for responsive reading. The “leader” parts can be spoken by the pastor, or better yet, designated to families or others who are responsible for lighting the Advent candles each week.
These alternate readings for the lighting of the Advent candles are based on the pattern provided in the Book of Common Worship (165-166), but substitute other texts and themes from the Revised Common Lectionary for the verses from Isaiah. The first is intended for general use, the second follows the gospel lessons in year B, the third is drawn from the epistle lessons and the fourth uses the Magnificat or Canticle of Mary from the Book of Common Worship (575).

We Believe
We Believe Workshop is written by Presbyterians for Presbyterians. Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations can be confident that this Workshop Rotation Model™ curriculum is based on the tenets of Reformed faith.
We Believe Workshop offers the following workshops in every unit: Art, Audiovisual, Computer, Drama/ Storytelling, Games and Puzzles, and Music and Worship. A seventh Bonus workshop varies.
As winter approaches and you prepare for the season of Advent, reserve one Sunday morning for an all-church multigenerational event. The unit “Advent: The Angels Announce God’s Message” can be used for this event by setting up seven stations corresponding to the seven workshops. Begin the event with the whole group gathered together and tell the Bible story. After the story has been shared, divide the group among the seven stations. Participants may engage in one or more of the workshops by traveling between the areas.
“Advent: The Angels Announce God’s Word” looks at Matthew’s Gospel, which offers the story from Joseph’s perspective, and Luke’s account, which tells what happens from Mary’s point of view.
Advent: The Shepherds explores Luke 2:8–20. |

A Service of Lessons and Carols
This Service of Lessons and Carols is adapted from the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols that has been celebrated annually at King's College, Cambridge, for almost a century. The nine Scripture lessons are those traditionally used at the festival, while the carols provided to accompany each passage have been selected from the Presbyterian Hymnal. Pastors and church musicians are encouraged to consider other hymns or appropriate spiritual songs, taking into account the cultural context and worship style of the congregation. The multiple readings present an opportunity to involve a number of different people from the congregation in the leadership of worship. Near the conclusion of the service, a time is set aside for prayers of thanksgiving and intercessions for the church and the world.
