Visits in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Women's group meeting in the DRCDebbie Braaksma, Africa Area Coordinator; Jeff Boyd, Regional Liason for Central Africa and I traveled to Kananga and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo this week to meet with Presbyterian Community of Congo (CPC) and Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa (CPK) church partners. In Kinshasa, we were joined by Christi Boyd, Facilitator for Women and Children’s Concerns for the PC(USA) in the region.

We had the opportunity to visit Presbyterian schools, hospitals supported by the PC(USA) and meet with church leaders about community development, health, evangelism, education and many other issues.

UN humanitarian arm gives $55 million to underfunded crises in eight countries

The Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations has worked with the NGO Working Group on the Security Council to bring attention to OCHA, including Under-Secretary General Amos and Security Council Member States on the humanitarian concerns in these areas.  We know that there is still much work to do, but are glad to see the Central Emergency Response Fund and OCHA making these commitments in these places.

High-Level Talks on HIV/AIDS at the UN

U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Susan Rice gave a statement about HIV/AIDS to the Security Council this afternoon.  She said, "Two decades of often heroic international efforts to extend the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS have significantly alleviated the health effects of the disease, but most people living with HIV still lack access to treatment. For every person who starts treatment, two more become infected."

Ambassador Rice's statement to the Security Council came as the High-Level Talks on HIV/AIDS are occurring at the United Nations.
