The future we want: International Day of Peace 2012

Grace Bickers, volunteer intern with the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations, wrote this reflection.

September 21 was the International Day of Peace, and this year’s theme was “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future.” The theme was planned to go along with the Rio+20 Conference of Sustainable Development that took place this summer.

The theme urges us to think about the role that the environment and natural resources play in conflict. Questions of ownership and management of these resources, including precious metals and stones, oil, and water, can directly contribute to conflict. Managing these resources in a sustainable ...

The Culture of Peace

Below is a reflection on the International Day of Peace by Rochelle Rawls-Shaw, intern at the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations.

I read on a card I picked up at the United Nations, “Everything that is needed to build a culture of peace already exists in each of us.” The UN defines a Culture of Peace as a set of values, attitudes, modes of behavior and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups, communities and nations.

The Presbyterian Book of Common worship ...

100 days and counting

International Day of Peace banner

Starting the 100 day countdown to the International Day of Peace, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on people around the world to consider how they can help build a ‘sustainable peace for a sustainable future.’ “If we are to build such a future, we must all play our individual part – I urge everyone, between now and 21 September, to think about how they can contribute,” Mr. Ban said in a message to mark the countdown. The UN General Assembly first established the International Day of Peace in 1982, eventually settling on 21 September as an annual day of non-violence ...

A picture tells of our seminar ministries

Anne of the Presbytery of West Virginia before Givat Haviva posters

This is one of my favorite recent pictures. It combines two important events that recently took place at the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations.

It was taken during the seminar for the Presbyery of West Virginia and shows Ann Patterson of First Presbyterian Church of Charleston, WV.

In the background are posters created by participants in the Youth Making a Difference seminar that suggest ways to observe the International Day of Peace.

A wonderful reminder of two wonderful events! Thanks, Nellie.

Jesu, joy, oh our heart's comfort

A hymn prayer for the International Day of Peace:

Jesu joy of our desiring
Holy wisdom, love most bright
Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring
Soar to uncreated light

We have sought our own good fortune
Not accounting for the cost
Indifferent to your face among us –
hardened, weary, labored, lost.

Jesu, joy of every sparrow,
Ice and island, rare earth, pine,
Are cheap goods worth our denial
That all life is intertwined?

Jesu, joy, oh our heart’s comfort
Our life’s strength, our soul’s sweet sun,
We need love, unwavering vision
To restore what we’ve undone ...

Aram Bae, Beatrice Terino, and Gaby Verdolini at the UN as part of the Youth Making a Difference Seminar

Thanks to Beatrice Terino for sharing this reflection:

I attended the UN trip as a member of the Brick Presbyterian Church. I had been told that I would meet with people from Israel who were visiting New York as a part of a program with Givat Haviva. The program was actually a photography class made up of youth from Israel – both Jews and Arabs. I had heard about the conflict between these peoples, but I did not know much about the ...
