Addressing the root causes of the conflict in South Sudan

From Presbyterian World Mission

Find ways to support our sisters and brothers in South Sudan.

The government of South Sudan has recently taken laudable steps to halt killings and human rights abuses by members of the armed forces, but South Sudan’s people still face multiple threats from inter-ethnic tensions, entrenched patterns of violence, natural disasters and conflict in neighboring Sudan.

South Sudan became an independent country on July 9, 2011, following a referendum in which its people overwhelmingly voted to separate from Sudan.  The referendum, agreed under a 2005 peace deal with Sudan, ended decades of civil war, but ...

Displaced by violence: the people of South Sudan need our help

From Presbyterian World Mission

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and Presbyterian World Mission are compelled to help more than 90,000 displaced people, mostly Murle, in South Sudan who fled inter-ethnic conflict and gross human rights violations by the South Sudanese military. Our goal is to provide food, emergency supplies, trauma recovery and peace building support. We are working with our Sudanese partners, but the needs are much greater than we can handle without significant gifts from supporters like you.

Presbyterian Relief and Disaster Assistance, the relief and development arm of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan, will be providing food, emergency ...

Kony 2012 and children in armed conflict

by Jessica Hawkinson

Millions of viewers have tuned in to the KONY2012 video and campaign, recently released by the organization Invisible Children. The campaign encourages public support for the arrest of Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), who is wanted for trial by the International Criminal Court. The campaign also seeks to build support for the disarmament of the LRA and rehabilitation of these child soldiers.

For all of the support the campaign has gained, many key stakeholders have raised ...

Rev. Omot asks for prayers that the negotiations will have fruitful results and peace may be established. Jonglei State in southern Sudan is among the regions where violence is taking place.

In this instance, much of the violence is situated in Pibor County. The conflict involves  people of the Murle and Lou Nuer ethnic groups. Cattle raiding and the abduction of children and women are part of the violence. There have been a number of waves of violence in the area in the past.
