From a March 6, 2012 press release by the UN Security Council:
Gravely concerned by reports of violent cross-border clashes between Sudan and South Sudan, the Security Council today demanded that all parties, including proxy forces, cease all military operations in the border areas and put an end to the cycle of violence.
Through a wide-ranging statement read out by its President, Mark Lyall Grant (United Kingdom), the Council, concerned about reported “troop movements, support to proxy forces, and aerial bombardments”, strongly urged the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan to reach agreement on the status of disputed border areas ...
From OCHA:
(New York / Juba, South Sudan, 3 February 2012): On the third day of a four-day visit to South Sudan, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC), Valerie Amos, met with representatives from the Government, the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS), and donor countries in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to discuss the complex humanitarian challenges facing the world’s youngest nation.
Humanitarian conditions remain extremely precarious for many South Sudanese, with clashes along the country’s disputed border with Sudan that have forced tens of thousands of ...

I am outraged by the Sudan Armed Forces’ heinous bombing yesterday of a school run by Samaritan’s Purse in the Nuba Mountains region of Southern Kordofan. It was the first day of school, and the campus was full of students, teachers, and families. While miraculously no one was killed, this attack—involving eight bombs dropped from the air—underscores the viciousness of Sudan’s ongoing military campaign in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
This conflict is now affecting more than 500,000 people ...
Below is a statement that comes from the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan.
(Juba, 20 January 2012): United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, Ms. Lise Grande, confirmed today that more than 120,000 people affected by the recent violence in Jonglei State may need emergency assistance.
“The violence in Jonglei hasn’t stopped,” Ms. Grande said. “Only two weeks ago we launched a massive emergency operation to help 60,000 people. As a result of recent attacks, we now estimate that double that number will need help.”
Fighting between Lou Nuer and Murle communities escalated sharply in ...
Below is taken directly from Office of the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan from the Sudan Tribune.
(Juba, 24 August 2011): The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, Ms. Lise Grande, has expressed her concern about the impact of renewed inter-communal violence on the civilian population in Jonglei State. Clashes have left villages burned, humanitarian assets looted and hundreds injured or killed.
Following reports of violence in Pieri and surrounding areas in Uror County, a humanitarian assessment team was dispatched to the area on 22 August. The team, which was made up of UN agencies as well ...
Statement by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the Report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Southern Kordofan, August 16, 2011
The United States welcomes the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the increasingly dire situation in Southern Kordofan. We are deeply disturbed by the reports of extrajudicial killings, attacks on civilians, mass graves, arbitrary detentions, abductions, house to house searches, forced displacements, and other clear violations of humanitarian law. We strongly support Commissioner Pillay’s recommendations, including immediate, unhindered access for humanitarian assistance and ...
I led morning prayers at the Church Center for the United Nations on Thursday morning. I shared a story about a member of the Communion of Saints - Samuel Johnson. I was reading the Bible, not Boswell. I met Samuel in Orangeburg, SC some fifteen years ago. It was good to remember him.
During the service, those present were invited to pray. The prayers touched on a variety of concerns - the Horn of Africa, the deadlock on the debt ceiling in the United States, family with illness, friends who had died, Norway, Sudan and South Sudan, Malawi, human rights and religious ...
Southern Kordofan - on the border between Sudan and South Sudan - remains an area of concern. A statement issued last Friday by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reflects on the situation in Southern Kordofan
The United States is deeply concerned about alarming and credible allegations of violence committed by Sudan Armed Forces and aligned groups in Southern Kordofan. These include acts of extreme cruelty and abuse against civilians that, if true, may constitute crimes against humanity – extra-judicial killings, house-to-house searches, abductions, arbitrary arrests, and violence motivated by differences of religion or ethnicity.

There are few times in one’s life where you can really say that you have witnessed history. I believe today to be one such occasion for me.
On Saturday, July 9, the world watched as South Sudan became fully independent from Sudan. This occurred just six months after the historic referendum where over 98 percent of the population in South Sudan voted for independence. The opportunity for the referendum was granted to the people by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, just years earlier.
Today, sitting in the chamber of the Security Council, I couldn’t help but ...
As these words are posted, it is early evening on 8 July 2011 in Sudan. Tomorrow brings independence for South Sudan - and significant changes for the peoples of what is now Sudan and what tomorrow will be two countries - South Sudan and Sudan.
Reports of violence continue. Plans for celebrations are in place. Fears choke at the people. Hope looms. Prayers continue:
God in your mercy, pour your grace upon all the peoples in what is now Sudan and what tomorrow will be South Sudan and Sudan. Lead them away from violence. Guide them in paths of peace. Strengthen them ...
Below is a press statement from Victoria Nuland, Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson, Department of State, Washington, DC
The United States is encouraged by the July 4 meeting between Sudanese President Bashir and First Vice President Kiir at the Extraordinary Session of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development on Sudan in Addis Ababa. We welcome the commitment that Sudan’s leaders made to continue negotiations on outstanding issues following South Sudan’s independence on July 9. We urge the parties to set a firm deadline – no later than the end of July – for the resolution of these issues. Leaving key ...

we pray into hope abounding.
We pray that justice and well-being will prevail
for all the peoples of Sudan and South Sudan,
for all the peoples of South Sudan and Sudan.
Bless the peoples.
Bless the nations.
Guide them in the paths of peace.
We pray in Jesus' name.

Prayers are always in order for the people of Sudan. Prayers are particularly in order as July 9 – the date when South Sudan becomes an independent nation draws near. Our sisters and brothers in Sudan and around the world are in prayer now and will continue in prayer until and after independence is achieved.
Remembering the role that prayer played in the days before the referendum, a number of faith communities will again come together in a Season of Prayer with the people of Sudan in this time. Specifically, we are invited to pray for thirty minutes on:
Day 2 of the Big Tent, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) gathering in Indianapolis, will see Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations staff involved in several ways.
We will help lead a workshop on involvement in public life and advocacy. Our colleagues in the Office of Public Witness will be our partners in this effort.
We will lead a conversation on our ministry and help lead a conversation on Sudan.
Taking part in the Presbyterian Peacemaking Conference and the World Mission Matters Conference will fill our day.

30 June 2011
In solidarity with the celebration of Southern Sudan’s Independence on July 9, we call on all WCRC member churches and area councils to pray for the people of Sudan between Sunday July 3 and Sunday July 10. We are aware that many of you have been praying for years for peace in this troubled country and urge you to continue to do so.
We ask especially that worship services on Sunday July 3 and Sunday July 10 include times of prayer for a peaceful transition into ...
We can always pray with the people of Sudan either on our own or as part of the Season of Prayer with the people of Sudan.
Here are two more opportunities:
If you are under the Big Tent in Indianapolis, there will be a time of prayer with the people of Sudan at the beginning of worship on Friday, July 1.
If you are in New York, you are welcome to come to an ecumenical prayer service on July 7, from 9:15-9:45 a.m. at the Church Center for the United Nations (777 United Nations Plaza).

Deeply concerned by the violence, escalating tensions and population displacement in Sudan’s Abyei region and recognizing that the situation demanded an urgent response, the Security Council today authorized the deployment of a peacekeeping force to the disputed area, which straddles Northern and Southern Sudan and is claimed by both.
Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, issued the following statement on the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1990:
This morning, the United States voted in favor of UN Security Council Resolution 1990, establishing the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). We are pleased ...
Jonglei State in southern Sudan is among the regions where violence is taking place.
In this instance, much of the violence is situated in Pibor County. The conflict involves people of the Murle and Lou Nuer ethnic groups. Cattle raiding and the abduction of children and women are part of the violence. There have been a number of waves of violence in the area in the past.
Reports indicate that the massive numbers of the Murle people have been killed. One estimate is that since the fighting began on 15 June around 900 people have died and that well armed ...

Bolbach, Parsons, and Valentine urge peace as July 9 independence nears
With violence flaring up in Sudan as the July 9 independence of South Sudan nears, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) leaders have called on all Presbyterians to pray for peace in the east African country.
The call was issued by General Assembly Moderator Cynthia Bolbach, General Assembly Stated Clerk Gradye Parsons and General Assembly Mission Council Executive Director Linda Valentine.
After decades of civil war between the Khartoum-based Islamist government of Sudan and the mainly Christian and animist south, a Comprehensive Peace Agreement was ...
As Sudan Advocacy Action Forum looks at unfolding events in Sudan, we see this pattern:
Months ago, the National Congress Party which controls the northern Sudanese government began arming and encouraging dissenting militia groups in Southern Sudan resulting in tribe on tribe and clan on clan assaults on each other. Hundreds, perhaps 2,000 have died and the situation gets worse daily.
Weeks ago, the Sudan Armed Forces (northern Sudan military) drove the Ngok Dinka residents out of Abyei forcibly changing the mix of people there. The fortunate escaped across the River Kiir. Many now are trapped because the bridge has been destroyed.

Security Council Report has published an Update Report on Sudan.
Council members have been individually assessing events in Sudan—the military takeover of Abyei and the deteriorating situation in Southern Kordofan—almost on a day-to-day basis, but Council members have not formally met on Sudan since 3 June and most of the scheduled informal discussions have been repeatedly postponed. The Council next meets on Monday 20 June, where it is expected they will receive a briefing on the outcome of the Addis Ababa talks. It is possible that Council members will then negotiate a mandate and authorise a force to ...

The Security Council expresses grave concern about the ongoing violence and rapidly deteriorating situation in Abyei since the Council addressed the issue in its May 22 Press Statement, in which the Council condemned the attack by Southern forces against a United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) convoy escorting Sudanese Armed Forces elements of Joint Integrated Units on May 19 in Abyei, and also condemned the escalatory military operations being undertaken by the Sudanese Armed Forces, which have taken control of the area in and around Abyei town.

God of the ages, July 9 draws near and I fear . . . I fear for my brothers and sisters in Sudan. I fear that preparations and plans for the independence of South Sudan have not been carefully made. I fear that the United Nations and the nations and intergovernmental organizations of the world are unclear as to how to engage and support this transition. I fear that individuals and communities and factions will turn too quickly to violence. I fear that war and destruction will again be unleashed: north against south, tribe against tribe, people against people. I fear for my ...

As the days tick down until July 9, 2011 when South Sudan is scheduled to become independent, a variety of concerns appear. One focuses on Abyei - a region and a town on the border.
The United Nations News Centre notes that:
The disputed town of Abyei, which is contested by both north and south Sudan, was the scene of renewed violence last week, including looting and burning, following the takeover of the area by Sudanese Government forces.
