Presbyterian Ministry at the UN hopeful for political solution in Colombia

Map of ColombiaOn January 25, 2016, the United Nations Security Council acted to "to set up a United Nations political mission in Colombia, approving a team of international observers to monitor disarmament should the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP) reach a final agreement to end Latin America’s longest armed conflict."

We welcome this step toward peace and give thanks for our partners in Colombia, particularly in the Presbyterian Church of Colombia, and the United States and elsewhere who have worked, and continue to work, for a just peace for our sisters and brothers.

Learn about conflict and sexual violence in east Congo

Our partners in World Mission are sponsoring a travel study seminar to the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo to look at issues related to conflict and sexual violence:

A diverse team of 12 Presbyterians will journey to Goma, on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on January 27, to take part in a 10-day World Mission travel-study seminar. Human Rights Day, observed each year on December 10, commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

This year's Human Rights Day is devoted to the launch of a year-long campaign called “Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always.” The campaign recognizes the 50th anniversary of two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly Dec. 16, 1966.

November 25 is the International Day to End Violence against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign! As you may know, this year’s UN celebrations will take place under the theme "Orange Your Neighbourhood - End Violence against Women and Girls Now". UN Security Council acts to double UN peacekeeping force in South Sudan

The United Nations News Centre reports:

The Security Council today authorized almost doubling the United Nations peacekeeping force in strife-torn South Sudan to nearly 14,000 in the face of a rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian crisis that has left hundreds of civilians dead and tens of thousands of others driven from their homes.

Big Tent - Day 2 - looking ahead

Day 2 of the Big Tent, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) gathering in Indianapolis, will see Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations staff involved in several ways.

We will help lead a workshop on involvement in public life and advocacy. Our colleagues in the Office of Public Witness will be our partners in this effort.

We will lead a conversation on our ministry and help lead a conversation on Sudan.

Taking part in the Presbyterian Peacemaking Conference and the World Mission Matters Conference will fill our day.
