Religious Freedom Day

Elon University at the Isaiah WallToday, students from Elon University joined us at the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations to look at the post-2015 development agenda, the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and intersections between social action and poverty. 

As part of their seminar, the group had the chance to visit the Permanent Mission of the United States to the United Nations.  The event, "Rising Tide of Restrictions on Religion: Religions Respond" was co-sponsored by the NGO Committee on Religious Freedom.

The World We Want

Today, on Nelson Mandela Day, I joined our interns Grace, Marissa, Anna and Brendan at a consultation on The World We Want Platform.  “The World We Want is a platform created by the United Nations and Civil Society to amplify people’s voices in the process of building a global agenda for sustainable development.”

UN and religious freedom

The United Nations Human Rights Council and the General Assembly have encouraged the continuing efforts in all parts of the world of the Special Rapporteur [for religious freedom and belief] to examine incidents and governmental actions that are incompatible with the provisions of the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief and to recommend remedial measures as appropriate (Human Rights Council resolution 6/37 and General Assembly resolution 61/161).
