About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Splash! An Interesting Introduction to the Waters

A friend recently sent me a video link to a string of funny mishaps that have been filmed in churches. You may have seen it. There is plenty of wedding footage – from fainting groomsmen to a photographer flipping over an unexpected pew. But there are also a couple of baptism scenes. One of those, in particular, struck me as I prepared this new blog.

As the picture-perfect family stood in front of the baptismal font, the baby while wrapped in loving arms, unassumingly kicked and sent the whole font crashing to the floor. Through the waters, indeed, was all I could think. It reminded me that baptism isn’t a magical ritual or even, sometimes, a pretty one. Instead, it’s our calling forth. Among other things, it’s God calling us into an amazing relationship. God doesn’t promise the path through those waters will always be clear or that we won’t find shallow spots and places that seem to swallow us. With all of our faults, God opens those waters to us. We’ll find stepping stones that help us get further and we’ll meet challenges that will cause ripples. Through it all, God is with us with our faith community along to cheer us and support us on the journey.

Welcome to this new blog that seeks to guide you through those waters; connecting you to resources and tools of discernment as you listen for God along your own journey. So, rather than kicking over the baptismal font, together we’ll be splashing in it! Come and join us!
