About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Give Thanks to the Lord

There has been a lot going on around us lately. We’ve been bombarded by news of strange weather patterns; people adversely affected by too much water, not enough water, high winds, and early snows. We hear about questionable decision making from those in esteemed positions and celebrities made famous by the media. We learn about wars and deadly fighting occurring across the world and the innocent victims of those tragedies. We read about the economic trials of those living in the United States and the ways in which its citizens choose to respond. Add to all of that our own pressures of school deadlines, looming exams, relationship problems, health struggles, job issues, and family troubles and things can seem rather bleak.

Our prayers may turn to those things with which we crave God’s help. We certainly pray on behalf of those who suffer and look for the ways God’s healing hands move in the world. But what about remembering those ways that God’s movement in our lives is already very evident?

 thankful quote

I recently changed the screensaver on my laptop. I needed a little hope and where do I tend to look the most on any given day? My computer screen. Right in the middle of my bright white screen is a violet-colored square with a variety of fancy fonts asking me, “What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” This one phrase, whose origin is unknown to me, has really caused me to stop and think. It’s changed my patterns; really changed my outlook.

In the midst of challenges around us, God continues to call us and continues to provide much for which we can be thankful. As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, may we keep in mind those who seek God’s hand while also being able to see the many things which God has given and eternally provides.

“O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast move endures forever!” (Psalm 118:1)

How have you seen God’s movement in the midst of struggles?

For what are you thankful today?

How will you demonstrate your thankfulness?
