About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

A Bug's Life

Ant HillI was recently in east Texas visiting relatives when one of the children came running into the house talking enthusiastically about the ants she saw out on the driveway. Because the house in which we stay is far from town and quite a distance from neighbors, it is common to hear stories about a variety of creatures whenever we are there. In fact, this visit we were even living above an armadillo that made its presence known each night. The description of the ants, though, intrigued me and I set out to check them out for myself.

As I got halfway down the long driveway and began to wonder how I would ever find the little ants that were described, I discovered that I couldn’t have missed them. Each of the tiny creatures was carrying a part of a leaf several times the size of the ant. They were all travelling in a line, from the wooded side of the driveway across to the open grass on the other side. Looking even closer, it was clear that the line of ants was not one line, but several. Somehow, these ants would veer off making the line form the shape of a “Y,” and then head to a particular hole in the grassy ground. I was suddenly aware of several of these lines of ants crossing the driveway and heading into at least eight different holes. At times, the ants were in sync and then at some point they seemed to know that their crew was to head off in a different direction and there they went, to their own hole. It’s not often that I have to carry a leaf or anything twice my size, for that matter, but the vision of the ants I saw has stuck with me.

We have the opportunity in this New Year to think about our own paths. I’m not talking about resolutions, really, but maybe re-evaluating or, well, discerning. Through our baptism, God has called each of us to some amazing things. Discernment is about developing our relationship with God and what better time to continue on that journey than 2012?

How might God be directing your path as you travel in another year?

With whom do you surround yourself that can help you follow that path?

How is your community blessing you with a home to return to?
