About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Unexpected Hunting

Easter EggsOn Easter Sunday, I was a part of an Easter Egg Hunt that was a bit of a role reversal. The whole event was designed by an eight-year-old and the other, significantly older participants were the egg hunters. This was no casual egg hunt, though. There were lots of rules. It is an understatement to say that the hunt designer had an idea in her mind about how this event would work and she wasn’t willing to stray from it.

If anything, though, it did make me think. How many of us are like her? We get an idea about how something will go and we get thrown off if it strays from that dream. Grades we didn’t expect, projects that develop differently, or relationships that go sour. I would guess that many, if not most of us, particularly the planners, go into the various parts of our lives with expectations we hope to be met.

This, then, caused me to think about the holiday I was celebrating in the first place. The whole experience of Easter is so far from what we would expect that it makes it even that more amazing. Jesus died. His body was buried. And after three days he was alive again! And it was all for us!

How often does our planning get in the way of pure joy? How many times do we miss the movement of the Spirit because we’re too wrapped up in the way we think things should go? How might God be trying to move in our lives and we’ve stomped it down because it just doesn’t fit our plans?

The great eight-year-old Easter Egg Hunt went off but not without adjustments to the plan. The hand-drawn map of all of the planned hiding places had to be disregarded. One of the eggs was never found. And then there were extra prizes after all had been claimed. In the midst of this, though, there was great joy. Family members were laughing together, the symbolism of the egg was shared, and I walked away with a homemade bookmark leftover from Valentine’s Day since I got a Golden Ticket in my egg!

How do you make room for the movement of the Spirit?

When has God surprised you?

What have you learned from the Easter miracle?
