About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

A Home for Faith

Our family is in the process of looking for a new house. What a chore! We are blessed to be able to have certain qualities that we’re specific about and others for which we are more flexible. Where is it located? How many rooms? What is the price? We think about our comfort and, thankfully, don’t have too worry much about safety (we know we are in the minority in this one). What a surprise, then, for the house hunt to turn into a great learning opportunity.

bird nest with eggsWe visited a house earlier this week and while the realtor was locking up behind us, we discovered a part of the house had already taken up new residents. On the front porch was a stack of firewood and resting on top was a messy nest filled with two white eggs. This forgotten pile had become a safe haven for a new family.

The very next day while sitting at my computer I heard a flutter out the side window of our rental house. I stepped out the back door and jumped as a bird quickly escaped into a nearby pine tree. As I looked up in the corner of the house, a large mother robin sat in an immaculate nest on the top of the deck. She made her presence known and there was so mistake that my curiosity was not welcome. This out-of-the-way corner had become an ideal place for the beginning of new life.

In these days after Easter, how appropriate that spring breaks forth. While the flowers and new green growth is most obvious, it is the concept of creating a home that struck me this year. While not all of us are physically looking for a new house or a place to build a nest, God calls us to find places where we can spawn new life. We are called to go out and look for opportunities to share what we believe and what we know is important. The details are not as important as the fact that we do it. It doesn’t matter if there isn’t enough storage or if the roof needs replacing. It doesn’t even matter if passersby occasionally get in the way or if things aren’t always neat and tidy. God calls us to new life.

How are you finding a home for faith?

What surroundings could be the best environment for your own new growth?

Where are those places that you might not expect but that help you realize what is truly important?

How will you find a way to share the message of God’s amazing gifts?
