About this blog

Through the Waters is the blog of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Christian vocation ministries. Because the ministry of Christian vocation affirms the need for all baptized Christians – including Presbyterians - to identify and claim their call to discipleship in each decision and life choice, this blog is designed to serve as a resource for youth and young adults, as well as those in ministry with them, to assist the Holy Spirit in God’s movement in this journey through the waters. Take some time to read and think about your own responses to the questions posed here. For additional resources, we suggest that you visit our website.

Making Contact

I work out of my house. While this arrangement also involves travel to meet up with my colleagues, on an average day when I’m in town it’s just my dog and I at the computer. OK, so my dog isn’t all that great with the keyboard yet. But, really, my main connection is just with the computer. In most ways, this is a great opportunity. I’m truly an introvert so my quiet days give me plenty of chances to gain my required energy from my internal sources.

After some time working this way, though, I have noticed some serious drawbacks. I have times when I get to the end of the day and realize that I have had virtually no personal contact with anyone other than family members. Granted, by personal contact, I’m not talking about email or phone calls – I have plenty of those. No, I mean face-to-face relationship. Contact.

I have comEarth with Handse to see this as something to change and I wonder how many others who don’t work out of their homes live similarly. We need others. As God’s people we were created to be in community. We are called to love and serve others. In order to do this, we need to know the others. More than standing in line behind them in Target. More than parking next to them in the Sonic Drive-up. More than sitting next to them in a class. We need to know each other’s needs, concerns, and joys.

In my situation, and maybe your own, I know these personal characteristics of my family and close friends and, for the most part, of my church family with whom I do have regular contact but what about those outside of that tight circle?  I venture to say that not being involved in the community in which we live is dangerous. After all, we learn more about the God whom we worship by getting to know ALL of those whom God created.

I can easily say “I don’t get out much” with a laugh but it isn’t something to be proud of. So, I’m off to find a way to reconnect with my community. After all, God is calling me.

How are you involved in your community?

How have you learned more about how God calls you from those around you?

How might God be calling you to be more active in the lives of those in your community?
