Light a Candle for Children Prayer Vigil

Light a Candle for Children is an advocacy and prayer project that invites congregations to join in a vigil of prayer for children. It begins forty days prior to the observance of the Children's Sabbath, this year from September 9 to the beginning of the Sabbath weekend, October 19.

Begun by a small congregation of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the vigil is now observed by congregations of many denominations and communions affiliated with the National Council of Churches of Christ, including the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Tomorrow (September 7), this blog will include the brief liturgies for use in worship each week. These brief candle lighting liturgies are designed to be used in the service of worship in the weeks leading up to the Children’s Sabbath. For congregations observing the denominational special emphases Sundays (Christian Education week, Theological Education/Seminary Sunday, Native American Day, Evangelism Sunday, World Communion/Peacemaking Offering Sunday, and Domestic Violence Awareness Sunday, the liturgies are designed to be appropriate for those emphases.

Because green is the liturgical color of ordinary time, you may choose to use a green candle. It serves as a reminder that the health and well-being of children is shaped by the ordinary elements of daily living: good food, clean water, safe housing, and loving nurture.

In the days of the week following each Sunday, check the blog for posts that call those who care about children to make them central in their petitions and prayers of thanksgiving.  During this same time period, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program calls us to a Season of Prayer for Peace. Look for prayer prompts in these posts that will incorporate the themes of this season, viewing them through the lens of children’s issues.
