CDF National Conference: Make a Difference for Children

Traditionally, summer has been a time for vacations, more leisure time and generally for church programming to takes breather. But for the Presbyterian Church (USA), at least at the denominational level, this summer is a time for the biennial General Assembly—a time of focused attention on policies and actions that will guide the work of the national church for the next two years. This year’s Assembly will consider a wide array of business items. The spotlight is on three or four areas of concern- marriage, who we ordain, the Middle East and the way we govern ourselves as a church.

Less noticeable is the business of the Social Justice Committee. Among other weighty issues on its agenda is a cluster of overtures and resolutions that call the church to speak to the state of our economy and how the downturn has impacted the most vulnerable among us.

Most of us will not have the chance to be in Pittsburg for the General Assembly. But those of us who care deeply about children do have the opportunity to get equipped to make a difference for them in the face of our economic challenges. Today, 16.4 million children in the United States live in poverty. Nearly one in four children under the age of five is poor. The Children’s Defense Fund, long a key partner for Presbyterian child advocates, is offering us the  opportunity to learn how to take action at its national conference, July 22-25 in Cincinnati. Learn more and register for the conference.
