Praise the Lord!

Proverbs 9:1-12

1Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. 2She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. 3She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, 4‘You that are simple, turn in here!’ To those without sense she says, 5‘Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 6Lay aside immaturity,* and live, and walk in the way of insight.’

7Whoever corrects a scoffer wins abuse; whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt. 8A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you; the wise, when rebuked, will love you. 9Give instruction* to the wise, and they will become wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will gain in learning. 10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. 11For by me your days will be multiplied,
and years will be added to your life. 12If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

Acts 8:14-25

14Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16(for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, 19saying, "Give me also this power so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." 20But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain God's gift with money! 21You have no part or share in this, for your heart is not right before God. 22Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and the chains of wickedness." 24Simon answered, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may happen to me."
25Now after Peter and John had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, proclaiming the good news to many villages of the Samaritans.

Luke 10:25-29, 38-42

25Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus.* ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 26He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ 27He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ 28And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’

38Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. 40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ 41But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried
and distracted by many things; 42there is need of only one thing.* Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’

Evening: Psalm 113:1-9

1Praise the LORD!

Praise, O servants of the LORD;

praise the name of the LORD.

2Blessed be the name of the LORD

from this time on and forevermore.

3From the rising of the sun to its setting

the name of the LORD is to be praised.

4The LORD is high above all nations,

and his glory above the heavens.

5Who is like the LORD our God,

who is seated on high,

6who looks far down

on the heavens and the earth?

7He raises the poor from the dust,

and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8to make them sit with princes,

with the princes of his people.

9He gives the barren woman a home,

making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the LORD!

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary:

Isaiah 49:8-16a

8Thus says the Lord:In a time of favour I have answered you, on a day of salvation I have helped you;I have kept you and given you as a covenant to the people,* to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages; 9saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out’, to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’They shall feed along the ways, on all the bare heights* shall be their pasture; 10they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them down, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. 11And I will turn all my
mountains into a road, and my highways shall be raised up. 12Lo, these shall come from far away, and lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Syene.* 13Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones. 14But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me.’ 15Can a woman forget her nursing-child, or show no compssion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. 16See, I have
inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.

Psalm 131:1-3

1O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,

my eyes are not raised too high;

I do not occupy myself with things

too great and too marvellous for me.

2But I have calmed and quieted my soul,

like a weaned child with its mother;

my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.*

3O Israel, hope in the Lord

from this time on and for evermore.

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

1Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they should be found trustworthy. 3But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. 4I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgement before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive commendation from God.

Matthew 6:24-34

24No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.* Do Not Worry 25‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink,* or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life
more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?* 28And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you — you of little faith?

31Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” 32For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But strive first for the kingdom of God* and his* righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34‘So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
