  What are Presbyterian congregation models?

Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, Calif. received the "2000 ENERGY STAR for Congregations Award" from the US Environmental Protection Agency. As a result of an energy audit, 780 fluorescent lamps and 88 incandescent bulbs were replaced with new energy efficient designs. The church's energy consumption was reduced by more than 25,000 kilowatt hours per year by this simple measure. Cost savings amounted to $12,000 per year; carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 70,000 pounds per year. The San Diego Gas and Electric Co. provided a rebate of $9,400, so Solana Beach's net cost was only $5,900.

Also prompted by an energy audit of church buildings, First Presbyterian Church in Pitman, N.J. implemented many energy saving measures in 1995. The church renovated the furnace (adding a switch to choose natural gas or fuel oil), replaced windows, upgraded lighting with energy efficient technology (including exit signs), and added thermostats to many rooms to increase savings when not in use. In addition to the physical changes, stewardship of God's creation is included in this congregation's worship life through sermons, hymns, and community activities.

As part of an overall conservation plan, Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, Ore. has signed an Energy Pledge from Oregon Interfaith Power & Light (a program of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon). The pledge states that 1) Southminster as a congregation will sign up for clean, renewable power through the local utility company or that three of the congregational members will become purchasers of renewable energy, 2) the congregation has a designated contact person committed to energy efficiency, and 3) the congregation will educate, organize, or take action for further energy conservation.

In addition to energy conservation measures as a congregation, Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland, Calif. has encouraged its members and friends to do likewise at home, school and work. The MPC Youth Group sold 445 compact fluorescent light bulbs to church members, friends, and neighbors and raised $1800 for a Mission Trip. Montclair also addresses global warming from the pulpit, in adult education classes, and in interfaith community settings.
