Earth Day Sunday is April 21, 2002. You may use these Earth Day Sunday resources then or, celebrate on any Sunday in the year that is convenient for your congregation! The purpose of Earth Day Sunday is to celebrate God's marvelous creation from a Christian perspective.

For many years, the Environmental Justice Ministry has sent to Presbyterian congregations an ecumenical resource to celebrate Earth Day Sunday (click Earth Day 2001 for an example).(1)

This year, Earth Day Sunday 2002 resources are on the web in order to save paper resources and so that people might be able to access them quickly, download the documents, and incorporate them as desired into congregational life. (For a hard copy of these resources, call Rebecca Barnes-Davies at 888-728-7228 ext 5811.)

This year, the PC(USA) Environmental Justice Ministry has decided to create Presbyterian-specific Earth Day 2002 materials on endangered species because the 213th General Assembly passed an overture called "Preserving Biodiversity and Halting Mass Extinction." Included in this Presbyterian resource are worship materials, background information, and links for more information and how to take action. Please feel free to adapt and use any of these resources as is fitting to your congregation's worship. We hope your Earth Day Sunday may be a blessed time for all of God's creation!

The particular species represented in these beautiful photos from David Young might not at the present time be endagered species. However, they represent the marvelous diversity of creatures in God's creation that we are called to protect.

  1. The Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA compiles the ecumenical resources. The NCCC Earth Day 2002 materials on children's health and the environment can be found at http://www.webofcreation.org/.
