The Multicultural Institute offers courses to enable and inspire clergy and laity in cultivating God’s biblical vision to gather people of diverse identities into inclusive communities of faith.
Course I
Expanding Your Boundaries: Learn to Speak Spanish in Five Days
Starts Monday, November 8. An immersion course that will have you speaking Spanish in the very first session and will send you home able to speak, read and write Spanish. With Lilia Ramirez and Gustavo Vasquez.
The Rev. Lilia Ramirez is pastor of Hispanic Presbyterian Church in Paterson, N.J., and coordinates the Latino Ministry Team of the Palisades Presbytery (N.J.). The Rev. Gustavo Vasquez is pastor of Presbyterian Methodist United Church of West New York, N.J., and graduated in social communication from the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Course II
Crossing Borders: Biblical Guidance for Counting the Risk and Reaping the Rewards
The new frontiers of cross-cultural ministry require specialized skills and abilities. Solid Bible study that hits the ground in your ministry contexts will include sermon preparation, lesson planning, staff development and leadership. Exploring the dynamic of multicultural church growth and ways to “grow your church deep and wide,” you'll leave with valuable tools for building healthy cross-cultural relationships within the church and the community. Dr. Bruce Grady, professor at Shaw University and associate pastor at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, N.C., is the instructor. The Rev. Raafat Girgis from the Office of Multicultural Congregational Support joins the class for a few sessions also, and he will focus on the biblical mandate for a multicultural vision of the church.
Course III
Jesus’ Follow Me: Practicing the Christian Call to Cultural Proficiency
How does the Church embody Jesus’ invitation to follow him across the boundaries that separate humanity? Learn and practice new skills for cross-cultural ministries, dismantling racism and building the beloved community. With DeBorah Gilbert-White, Gun Ho Lee and Marcia Mount Shoop.
The instructors for this course are Dr. DeBorah Gilbert-White, the Rev. Dr. Gun Ho Lee, staff member for Multicultural Ministry in the New Hope Presbytery, the Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Durham, N.C., and the Rev. Dr. Marcia Mount Shoop, moderator of the Presbyterian Multicultural Network board and theologian in residence at University Presbyterian Church, Chapel Hill, N.C.
