February 2007 — The Coalition of Immokalee Workers are planning a multi-city truth tour to expose the truth about farmworker exploitation that lies behind the “golden arches.”
The tour will culminate with a mass rally at McDonald’s global headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., on Friday, April 13 and a Carnaval Parade for Fair Food in downtown Chicago on Saturday, April 14. Religious and human rights notables such as the Rev. Michael Livingston, President of the National Council of Churches, Delores Huerta, co-founder of the UFW, and Kerry Kennedy will join the CIW in calling on McDonald’s to work with the CIW to end the exploitation of farmworkers in its tomato supply chain.
As the CIW members make their way to Chicago, they will be hosted overnight in Atlanta, Louisville and Urbana by Presbyterian congregations. Workers will offer educational sessions on the McDonald's campaign and share in worship.
In 2005 the CIW and Yum! Brands forged a ground-breaking agreement that has nearly doubled workers’ wages and improved working conditions for farmworkers harvesting for Taco Bell. But despite more than two years of entreaties from the farmworkers, the PC(USA) and consumers around the country, McDonald’s has steadfastly refused to work with CIW to ensure such changes in their own supply chain.
Join Presbyterians from across the country who will be coming to Chicago to bear witness to a just way of doing business that ensures farmworkers’ human rights! Don’t miss this historic event.
