Ufford-Chase urges Presbyterians to 'get in the boat with Jesus'

Elder Rick Ufford-Chase, a 40-year-old border mission worker from the Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona, was elected moderator of the 216th General Assembly Saturday night.

Ufford-Chase will be the first Presbyterian Church (USA) moderator to serve for two years.

He apparently impressed the commissioners with his deep commitment to risky, life-on-the-line mission work.

Ufford-Chase founded BorderLinks, a bi-national organization that tries to connect and educate people of faith on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. He has served BorderLinks for 17 years. [Read more]

Ufford-Chase says he'll ‘grab a-hold of' chance to serve PC(USA)

In his first post-election press conference, Rick Ufford-Chase proved himself to be a man of few words.

He offered only a two-sentence, 76-word statement before asking the assembled reporters for questions.

“The Presbyterian Church (USA) is alive and excited about its mission in the world," he said.

The young moderator, an elder from Tucson, AZ, said he wasn't really surprised to be elected but is grateful for the “opportunity to serve God's church and to serve the needs of the Assembly.” [Read more]

The line stretched around the second level of the Richmond Convention Center Sunday as members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) queued up to shake the hand of the new moderator of the General Assembly.

Elder Rick Ufford-Chase, a 40-year-old border mission worker from Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ, was elected Saturday night. He will be the first PC(USA) moderator to serve a two-year term.

Some of the Presbyterians who attended the moderator's reception had their pictures snapped with Ufford-Chase and his wife of 12 years, Kitty Ufford. Others simply hugged him or offered congratulations.

“Exhilarating. It's incredible,” Ufford-Chase said of his first day in his new post. “There's an energetic spirit alive in the church. I'm getting people from across the church who are giving me a hug and saying, ‘Let's do it together.' And that's what this is all about. It's been great.” [Read more]

  Vice moderator named

Rick Ufford-Chase, the newly-elected moderator of the 216th General Assembly, told commissioners Sunday afternoon that he has chosen the Rev. Jean Marie Peacock, associate pastor of Lakeview Presbyterian Church in New Orleans and a commissioner from South Louisiana Presbytery, as his vice-moderator.

Peacock's responsibilities at her 330-member congregation include youth and collegiate ministries, evangelism and Christian education.

Peacock, who has a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Masters in Social Work from Arizona State University, spent seven years in mission work in the PC(USA), first as a mission volunteer at Stony Point Conference Center in New York and later in border ministry. It was in that connection that she met the new moderator, about 18 years ago. She has also worked as a community organizer in South Tucson. [Read more]
