RICHMOND, July 2 - With little debate and just one amendment, the General Assembly acted on the recommendations of its Mission Coordination and Budget committee "in record time," committee Moderator Catesby Woodford said from the podium Thursday night.
The Assembly approved a commissioner's resolution to "strengthen Hispanic-Latino ministry" in the church through the hiring of more Spanish-speaking staff and implementation of a new Hispanic strategy in the 2007-2008 budget.
The Assembly also approved a recommendation from a Special Offerings Task Force to keep the church's current special offerings in place but review them more often, moving from every six years to every four.
Because of budget limitations, commissioners voted to replace the word "direct" with "encourage" in a measure calling on the General Assembly Council (GAC) to fund and staff a denominational office of equal-employment opportunity and affirmative action.
The coordination and budget committee meets once more Saturday morning to finalize the unprecedented two-year mission budget. |
