Additional Activities at the
Assembly
PYC Pre Assembly for Youth
Help your youth and youth leaders to "Shine Like the Stars!" Register today for the Presbyterian Youth Connection (PYC) Pre Assembly, held just prior to the General Assembly
June 12-15 at the Sheraton and Convention Center. Visit the Youth Assembly Web site.
Exhibit Hall
The exhibit hall will be located in the Birmingham Jefferson
Convention Complex (BJCC), sponsored by the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.), the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in America. This is an excellent way to
find out about the latest resources and happenings across all
three denominations. Be sure to visit the displays of each of
the General Assembly agencies and many related projects and
groups, and those of the Cumberland denominations
and our cooperative ministries. The exhibit hall will be open
from Thursday, June 15 through Wednesday, June 21. Specific
hours will be listed at the time of the assembly
Face-to-Face Event
Church Leadership Connection (CLC) of the National Ministries
Division will sponsor an informal Face-to-Face event at the
assembly. Ministers, church professionals, church educators,
interim ministers, and others seeking a new call may review
church information forms and schedule interviews, and search
committees and middle governing body executives may review personal
information forms and make arrangements for interview times.
For more information, call 1 (888) 728-7228 x5730, or visit
the CLC Web site.
Twelve Step Meetings
Presbyterians for Addiction Action (PAA), a network of the Presbyterian
Health, Education & Welfare Association (PHEWA) will sponsor
12-step meetings (AA, NA, OA, ALANON) each day during the assembly.
Presbyterianism: Principles
and Practices
The Committee on Theological Education and San Francisco Theological
Seminary sponsor this for-credit seminary course. It is designed
to inform seminarians about the structure and mission of the
PC(USA), provide firsthand experience related to how a General
Assembly works, and encourage focus on issues currently being
debated within the denomination. Classes begin at 10:00 a.m.
on Wednesday, June 14. Advance registration is required; contact
Sue Ann Wichman.
Christian Educator Certification
Course
The Association of Presbyterian Church Educators sponsors this
course on the Polity, Program and Mission of the PCUSA. It fulfills
two course requirements for Christian Education Certification.
Participants study the PC(USA) Constitution, complete projects,
and attend assembly committee meetings and plenary sessions.
Through exposure to the assembly, they receive a broad understanding
of the structure, governance, an mission of the denomination.
Classes begin on Thursday, June 15, and end on June 20. Advance
registration (by April 30) is required. Contact Peggy
Owens at (502) 561-8300.
The Moderator’s
Reception
The Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley invites all assembly
participants to a reception for the Moderator of the 217th General
Assembly (2006), that will be held in the Sheraton Hotel Ballroom
at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex on Sunday, June
18, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. The Moderator will greet commissioners,
advisory delegates, friends, and guests. Refreshments, music,
and entertainment will be offered.
Mission Tours
The Committee on Local Arrangements has planned several mission/cultural
tours on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday during the assembly.
Some tours are oriented to particular Presbytery of Sheppards
and Lapsley missions, while others focus on local and regional
cultural and historic sites. The tours are likely to be very
popular and seating is limited.
City Stages Music Festival
At the same time that the General Assembly is meeting in Birmingham,
the city will also be hosting its annual downtown music festival
called City Stages. The festival area is centered just a short
walk from the convention center. City Stages management has
agreed to allow us to offer discounted tickets for the event.
Concerts are held on several stages throughout the festival
grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings.
A complete line-up of performers can be found at the City
Stages Music Festival Web site.
