Black Belt of Alabama $35.00
Samuel “Sambo” Mockbee, was a practicing architect and Professor of Architecture at Auburn University who conceived and founded the Rural Studio concept. He dedicated his life, as a teacher and as an architect, to the goal of providing “shelter for the soul.” His inspirational and authentic architecture served to improve the lives of the most impoverished residents of rural Alabama. In 1992, Mockbee set out with twelve students for what was to be a one-year educational experiment. Over a decade later, Newbern, Alabama has become the Rural Studio’s base and throughout the area the studio has designed and built simple but innovative structures made of inexpensive, mostly salvaged or donated, and often curious materials such as beat-up railroad ties, old bricks, donated lumber, hay bales, baled corrugated cardboard, rubber tires worn thin, auto license plates and road signs. The day will include lunch served in Greensboro. Transportation departs from the convention center.

Accessibility Advisory: One of the stops, the “Tire Chapel,” is not wheelchair accessible. There will be some walking on an unpaved, grassy area.
