Montgomery – Civil War to Civil Rights $50.00
Several stops on this tour will tell the story of Montgomery’s
history from the Civil War to Civil Rights. We will stand at
the steps of the Alabama State Capitol where Jefferson Davis
was inaugurated as President of the Confederacy and witness
the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement re-enacted at the
Rosa Parks museum. At the Civil Rights Memorial we’ll
experience a moving tribute to the soldiers of the Civil Rights
Movement who gave their lives for freedom. Engraved in the wall
of the water feature at the site is Martin Luther King’s
well-known paraphrase of Amos 5:24 – “We will not
be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness
like a mighty stream.”
Lunch will be served at Memorial Presbyterian
Church where we’ll learn about the church, its missions
and the part it played during the Civil Rights Movement. At
the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church we’ll see
the pulpit where Dr. King first preached his message of hope
as well as the original mural depicting the life works of Dr.
King. The tour will also go to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival
Theatre, an internationally acclaimed site of one of the ten
largest Shakespeare Festivals in the world. It is the only American
theatre invited to fly the flag of England’s Royal Shakespeare
Company. Transportation departs from the convention center.

Mission/Cultural Tour 9
“. . . the holy Catholic church . . . “ $25.00
This tour visits two remarkable sites that are of interest not
only to the Catholic world but to the ecumenical world as well.
The Ave Maria Grotto is on the site of St. Bernard Abbey, the
only Benedictine abbey in Alabama. The stone and cement miniature
versions of world famous buildings and Biblical stories are
the legacy and creation of a Bavarian monk, Brother Joseph,
who spent 70 years of his life at the abbey. The second stop
will be at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This magnificent
structure was built under the direction and guidance of Mother
Angelica, founder of the Eternal World Television Network (EWTN).
It is said to be the Catholic world’s most visited shrine
after Lourdes and Fatima. Transportation departs from the convention
center.
Accessibility Advisory: The Grotto has a paved
path with benches for resting and moderate incline/decline areas.
The Shrine is accessible but the parking area is some distance
from the entrance. Wheelchairs are available for those who would
have difficulty walking that distance.

down and back, but no other facilities will be available. A
box lunch and drinks will be provided with the ticket cost.
Accessibility Advisory: Participants must
be able to get in and out of the canoe even when it is in the
river and should wear clothing and shoes that can get wet and possibly
muddy. Hats and sunscreen are also advised. The four-mile section
of the river contains some shoals but no rapids. Participants
must be able to paddle. Ability to help port the canoes from
the trailers to the water and back would be very helpful. We
