History Lives in Selma, Alabama – Footsteps for Freedom
$50.00
Several stops are included on this tour through historic Selma.
Valley Creek Presbyterian Church is the “mother”
church of Presbyterianism in the state of Alabama, and the state’s
oldest continuously operating church. It was founded in 1816,
predating statehood. We’ll tour Sturdivant Hall, one of
the South’s outstanding Greek revival antebellum houses.
Lunch will be served at the historic pre-Civil War First Presbyterian
Church. The Old Depot Museum has exhibits covering the Civil
War through Civil Rights and is one of only twelve railway depots
of its kind still standing in the Southeast. There will also
be a stop at the Brown Chapel AME Church, headquarters for the
Civil Rights Movement in Selma and birthplace of the 1965 voting
rights marches. During the trip, we will pause at the “Old”
Live Oak Cemetery and will cross the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge
and remember the courage of the thousands who overcame violence
and hardship on their 1965 Selma to Montgomery march for voting
rights. Transportation departs from the convention center.

Caring Times Three $15.00
First Presbyterian Church made history in the presbytery by
reaching out to the disenfranchised in the Birmingham metropolitan
area. The church’s Ruth and Naomi Senior Outreach was
created to minister to older adults with few financial resources
and ones living and dying in isolation. The First Light ministry
came from a commitment to provide sanctuary to women and children
who find themselves without a home and income. It was the recipient
of $250,000 from the 1999 Presbyterian Women’s Birthday
Offering. Now supported by congregations throughout the presbytery,
First Light is housed in a former downtown hotel and operates
“in the black” each year. The third stop, Greater
Birmingham Ministries, had a Presbyterian beginning thirty-five
years ago and is now an ecumenical ministry. It operates a food
distribution center, a place to find clothing, and a networking
facility to help people find employment. Transportation departs
from the convention center.
