Seattle's Intentional Community Program is a site of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Young Adult Volunteer Program. Our mission is to provide an urban discipleship experiences for 20-30 year old adults: to train them to be the next generation of church leadership and choose a Biblical lifestyle that embraces intentional, incarnational ministry to the urban poor. YAV's commit to a year in the IC program. The program is unique in that IC'ers work full or part time to support themselves while in the program. They also commit themselves to 10-12 hours of service within the city at one of its several ministry partners. These ministries work with groups such as homeless youth, the African-American community, high-school and middle school aged at-risk youth, and within the arts community. Beyond their commitment of service, IC'ers spend time weekly with their house in prayer, Bible study, in table fellowship, learning and discussing issues pertinent to the city such as urban ministry and social justice, as well as seeking to be involved in their neighborhood. IC'ers also have an opportunity to take trips to El Salvador and Chicago during the year as they seek to expand their understanding of the Kingdom of God and God's people.
To participate in the IC program, each YAV is asked to raise $2000. This covers the two trips we take during the year. They work to pay their rent, food and any additional expenses they may have. The NVO provides other benefits such as health care, student loan reimbursement and travel reimbursement. |
