It's a Matter of Faith
AIDS in Africa
Africa stands to lose an entire generation to the AIDS epidemic that is sweeping the continent. In some pockets of sub-Saharan Africa, up to 20 percent of the population is infected with AIDS or the virus that causes the disease. [Read more] |

"Transformation for Health" in the Democratic Republic of Congo
In May 2006 the PC(USA) will partner with Global Health Action (GHA) to conduct a "Transformation for Health" (TFH) workshop in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The workshop is designed to equip health professionals and community leaders to become trainers to "engage their whole community in the process of transforming their lives for the better." Central to this workshop will be the goal to empower women and youth to transform their lives and the lives of their communities as they relate to HIV/AIDS.
A generous grant from the Presbyterian Women and funds from International Health Ministries are making this possible. Read more.

How is PC(USA) involved?
The AIDS Task Team directs staff activities
and coordinates projects. Partnerships between African solutions
and United States support are facilitated by a three member team.

Presbyterian
AIDS Action
Presbyterian AIDS Action is the international program of the
Presbyterian Church (USA). Responding to the crisis of AIDS in
the countries with the highest infection rate, the Presbyterian
Church (USA) established a team of three (Janet Guyer, Coordinator
for East and Southern Africa, Caryl Weinberg, Coordinator for
West and Central Africa, and Dorothy Hanson, AIDS Project Manager
in Louisville, KY.) In 2004 this team will be increased by a third
person on the African continent.
Identifying the status of the partner Presbyterian churches in
Africa, the team then tells the story in the US, enlisting Presbyterian
individuals, congregations and presbyteries to enter into partnerships
with the Africans.

Presbyterian
AIDS Network (PAN) is the volunteer organization under National
Ministries Division of the PC(USA) that deals with these issues
in the United States. Presbyterian AIDS
Action and Presbyterian AIDS Network
combine efforts at events such as General Assembly and work together
on issues pertaining to both. |

How
my church gets involved:
- Spread the facts - AIDS in Africa and the
Church's response.
- AIDS Talking
Points.
- Organize the local congregation to prepare
at least one AIDS Home-Based-Care Kit
as a first step in becoming involved.
- Tell Presbyterians - poverty & disease
go together.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
- PRAY - for
someone living with AIDS.
- Speak with their local congregations about
working with other Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations in
support of the AIDS strategy being developed in PC(USA) Partner
Churches in Africa.
- Seek God's direction and strength and make a personal commitment
to respond to the problem of AIDS in Africa.
- Worship and pray — The message is intense.
HIV/AIDS in Africa has created an immediate and urgent need for
action by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and all of the congregations.
The immediate overwhelming need could feel like a burden but,
we are all working together in God's way - stop, worship, pray
to know the right personal or congregational response. Be energized
by knowing that together we can make a difference through Presbyterian
AIDS Action.
Then phone (888) 728-7228 x5415 for support, ideas and coordination
with other partners. We look forward to these contacts!

Orphans and vulnerable children |
|
| |
|
|
| |
By 2010, one third of Africa's children will be orphaned. One of the tragic consequences of the HIV/AIDS crisis is the growing numbers of orphaned and vulnerable children. Deaths from AIDS contribute to the estimated 16 million African children under age 15 who live without mother or both parents. Churches are at the epicenter of this challenge, seeking to meet it with creativity, love and wisdom. They are at the heart of each community and it is there that the challenge must be met. |

The PC(USA) is grateful for the opportunity to share in this ministry with national church partners in sub-Saharan Africa. We are helping with capacity building and providing resources to expand the ministry of Community Based Orphan Care (CBOC) which addresses the basic needs of large numbers of children and their caregivers. |

June, 2004 news from Africa: Community-Based Child Care Centres (CBCC) is the new and best term to use. "This will (might) reduce the stigma that often surrounds 'orphans' in the community." AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Africa
Donations help meet the desperate needs of vulnerable African children through Community-Based Orphan Care (CBOC) programs. Many have lost one or both parents to AIDS. CBOC programs help provide basic needs including food, clothing, education and medical care. Funds are also used to train CBOC caregivers.
