In Malawi one of every five persons is Presbyterian. The three Synods collectively worked on a World AIDS Day 2002 Project. Every congregation was requested to present the need for Home-Based-Care supplies and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. In September, an educational package was sent to every congregation, giving time for each to translate the materials into the language suitable for their people. There were lead-up activities for the Sundays preceding World AIDS Day. The expectation is to help both break the silence concerning AIDS and decrease the stigma associated with AIDS, particularly within the church body. Click here for prayers from the CCAP educational package.

The AIDS Home-Based-Care Kit program will train and supervise volunteers, recruited through Presbyterian congregations, to assist their neighbors with the task of caring for loved ones at home. Basic medical supplies needed for home care make up the kits. The message of Christian concern and compassion offered with each home care visit goes beyond the provision of home health care information and supplies.

The Malawi World AIDS Day 2002 Project and AIDS Home-Based-Care Kits are examples of African solutions requiring United States support. To help, email WAM@ctr.pcusa.org or phone (888) 728-7228, ext 5415. Dorothy Hanson, AIDS Project Manager, International Health Ministries will facilitate these partnerships along with the Coordinators already working in Africa, Janet Guyer and Caryl Weinberg.

Seminar

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) launched Presbyterian AIDS Action at a seminar, The Global AIDS Pandemic, October 24-27 in New York City. [Learn more]

The goal of Presbyterian AIDS Action is to build links between Presbyterians in the US and Partner churches in Africa - Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Malawi, to start. For seminar proceedings, click here.

So Presbyterians in the United States join brothers and sisters around the world. Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in Malawi's Moderator of the General Synod called on all Presbyteries and congregations "to help our congregations and our entire nations to live."
