Community Health Programs, EECMY
Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus was established in 1959 as an independent church. The Western Synod represents one of the seven synods into which the church is organized. The church is committed to spiritual work as well as social development activities based on the conviction that the Gospel embraces the whole human being with all its needs.
The head office of the Western Synod is located 510 km west of Addis Ababa in the western Wollega Region. It is bordered by the Blue Nile River in the north and the Illubabor Region in the South. The population served by the Western Synod is about 1.5 to 2 million people. Most of them are subsistence farmers who sell their products to the market and to government cooperatives. The staple food is maize, the cash crop coffee and oil seed. There are few good roads and telephone and postal services are not yet fully developed for the area. The Aira Hospital, located in the Western Synod, is the base of the community health care program.
This is administered from the public health office, a relatively small but well equipped facility for training community health workers.
The work of the EECMY, especially in the area of community health and development, is done in cooperation with the present government and is assisted by PC(USA) Extra Commitment Opportunities funds (Acct.#862141).
