Health and Social Development Programs
Bangladesh
Most of the congregations of the Church of Bangladesh
are in rural, underserved areas that lack basic social services
and health care. In order to minister more effectively to the
people in their communities, the Church of Bangladesh has requested
assistance in planning, implementing, and evaluating its health
and social development programs. The Church must choose the
most important needs and apply its limited resources in the
most effective way. Keeping the love of Jesus Christ at the
center of its work is the Church's top priority. PC(USA) mission
workers Drs.
Leslie and Cynthia Morgan are assisting in the development
of these programs, and funds are needed to help the church explore
ways of effectively serving people and to help it set up programs
that reflect its commitment to compassion and love.
In an effort to strengthen their health ministry,
the Church of Bangladesh has established the following six goals
for its health programs that it hopes to achieve by the year
2000: 1. Develop a statement describing the Church's understanding
and commitment to health and healing. 2. Develop a program to
provide comprehensive health education in all parts of the Church
and to ensure that primary health care is available in each
community. 3. Develop a spiritual ministry in each health program
to empower the life of health workers and, through them, the
people they serve. 4. Promote the integration of health into
the other work of the Church and its neighbors by arranging
meetings between representatives of all institutions and programs.
5. Develop a plan for establishing an endowment for the Church's
health work for the poor and explore ways of increasing local
income at the projects. 6. Evaluate the overall health programme
of the Church and develop a plan that includes a special goal
for the health ministry of the Church every year.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) supports all of this work through
the
Extra Commitment Opportunity account #862412.
