Bethany Hospital
Tacloban Leyte, Philippines
Bethany Hospital was founded by the Board
of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and
has been in existence for more than 50 years as a teaching and
training hospital. During World War II, the hospital changed
hands many times. Liberated in 1944, it became an army supply
depot, a WAC Headquarters, and finally a provincial hospital.
In 1948 the government released it to become a church-related
hospital again.
The 125 bed Bethany Hospital in Tacloban City
is well equipped with a national staff of approximately 175
and has facilities for modern patient care. The complex of six
concrete buildings surrounded by six hectare of land, is the
medical center for all people in the area, regardless of creed.
The role of the hospital is twofold: to maintain the highest
quality of medical care and to combine the scientific practice
of healing art with the message of Jesus Christ.
Nursing and medical technology students from
schools in the area rotate in the hospital as part of their
clinical training. The hospital is registered as a tertiary
center with a bed capacity of 75 but could be expanded to 125
if necessary.
The work of the Bethany Hospital is assisted
by grants from the PC(USA) Extra Commitment Opportunities funds
(Acct.# 862232).
