Focus: Health Awareness
Many who work in health-related fields feel that health awareness is an ongoing process. Health is no longer defined and understood as the absence of symptoms or sickness, but is described as a balance of the physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual dimensions or aspects of one's life. Throughout this year the Health Awareness Focus will shift from one dimension to another until all have been included. We will begin by focusing our awareness on the physical dimension of health — on ways that our physical health can be positively affected by what we do and also on how our actions as allies and advocates can have an impact on the health of those whose health status has been negatively affected by historic lack or health care and health information. The health issues facing today’s children cannot be painted with a single brushstroke. Economic security, physical safety of neighborhoods, access to health care, parental presence and a host of factors influence the health status of young people in the United States. However, the unfortunate reality for most children today is that they are not quite as safe, not quite as protected and not quite as often encircled by concern and care as generations before them. | Stress and the College
Student |
 |
|
Many people experience stress as
they combine busy lives and the demands of study and or
work while trying to also save time for friends and family.
For some people, stress becomes almost a way of life.
We all experience episodic stress—getting ready
for a major exam, completing an important paper, perhaps
getting ready for an important interview. However, a continuous "state" of
stress should not become a way of life. We know that stress
over a prolonged period of time can increase certain health
risks, to say nothing of the wear and tear that happens
to relationships and general well being.
This simple guide uses materials adapted
from several college campuses with active stress reduction
programs. It explores the origins of stress and provides
some basic ways to assess the level of stress you may be
feeling and then suggests some easy-to-incorporate ways
to decrease the level of stress.

Health
care issues and access to care in rural areas
Rural communities are facing a multidimensional health crisis. The changes taking
place in rural communities today profoundly affect the culture of the community
and the physical, psychological, spiritual and economic health of the people
who live there. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
|
This article will explore the impact of the agricultural revolution
and the resultant economical and cultural impact on health related
issues in rural communities and the people who live there. It
will begin with an identification of the major health risks of
rural populations and the importance of public health programs
in addressing these risks. It will also examine access to physical
and psychological health care through both institutions and health
care providers, and the impact economic changes have had on the
availability of services. |
|
| |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
The article will identify ways in which congregations,
and the wider church can help improve the pattern of rural health
care and support people living in rural communities. The challenge
articulated to the church is crucial: what is the role of the
church and how can it respond to the rural health crisis, not
only to provide spiritual support and guidance during difficult
situations, but to proactively voice the concerns of the congregations
and positively impact the psychological and physical health
of the community—now and for future generations? Download this article |

Increasingly people are turning to the Web for health-related information. Many Web sites have valuable, cutting-edge information. However, Web sites have become an inexpensive means of marketing and because unfortunately there are unscrupulous people, sites offering medical information, curative treatment with an attached cost and other health related content should be approached with caution. The 10 questions below are provided to help determine whether a health site is credible. [Read more]
