Get on the road to better health …

Keys link to online health right assessment

A landmark study, the Health and Ways of Living study (also called the Alameda County study), followed 7000 people living in Alameda County California for almost 40 years, between 1965 and 2004. The conclusions of this study support what other, shorter studies have found. Lifestyle habits can have a pronounced effect on our lives and the length of our lives. Persons following six of the seven key health practices lived longer, on the average 11 years for men and seven years for women, than those following fewer key health practices. What are these “magical” practices?

  • Eating regular meals (avoiding frequent snacking)
  • Eating breakfast regularly
  • Getting adequate sleep (seven - eight hours daily)
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Not smoking
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Participating regularly in physical activity

Take a Health Risk Assessment inventory

An effective way to begin working on reducing health risks in to take an inventory of health related behaviors. Beginning on the next page you will find a Health Risk Assessment inventory. You will be asked to report certain data on lifestyle factors and health risks, necessary to evaluate your health status. The survey also asks for your height, weight, blood pressure and total cholesterol, so you will want to have these values in hand before you begin the inventory. The inventory will take you less than 10 minutes to complete. See instructions below before logging on.

Once you have completed your assessment and read the recommendations, you may access additional information geared to help you learn ways to reduce your risks and to decide how you can best approach a health risk reduction plan. You can find this information on the “Making Health Choices” page or you may look at resources that are available in other sections of the National Health Ministries “Health Information” section.

A few words of caution before you go further ...

  1. The health risk assessment is a tool that identifies heat risks based on behaviors. It does not and should not take the place of the medical screening tests that are very important in early disease diagnosis.
  2. For many of us who lead sedentary lives, additional exercise is frequently among the recommendations we are given. Before you embark upon an exercise program, PLEASE consult your physician and be certain that you have no underlying medical condition that might make strenuous exercise harmful.
  3. If you did not have recent values that were requested as a part of the assessment (Blood pressure, total cholesterol, height, weight, etc.,) please use this occasion as a reminder that these are pieces of health information that could well save your life.

Are you ready to get on the road to better health?
