Preface to the paper ...
This white paper is intended to facilitate the sharing of ideas
on issues relevant to community based home health care needs
and
support services for rural residents. Specifically, the paper
addresses the problem of unmet health care and support needs
of
a rapidly expanding rural elderly population. It is well known
that as the population ages, there is a corresponding increase
in the need for health care and support services. More than 62
million Americans (25 percent of the U.S. population) live in
rural areas and a growing proportion are elderly who suffer from
one or more chronic conditions. This paper presents a rather
broad
landscape of issues relevant to the health and well-being of
rural elderly in order that readers have some background knowledge
of,
and an appreciation for, the plethora of factors impacting any
proposed solution(s).
The topics addressed in a condensed format include:
- health care costs and health policy;
- community-based initiatives and programs;
- chronic illnesses and disabilities;
- rural and frontier populations;
- faith-based organizations and the faith-health movement;
- parish nursing and rural chaplaincy;
- elderly, long-term care and caregivers;
- home health care;
- telecommunications, the Internet and the Digital Divide;
and
- home telecare
