A Study of Psalms (1999--2000) |
|
This study examines the book of Psalms thematically, grouping multiple psalms together to find repetition of feeling in the range of human experience. This repetition leads to the arrangement of psalms into nine types of songs: celebration, instruction, remembrance, trust, vengeance, confession, praise, individual lament, and communal lament. With this thorough list, Fane Downs scrutinizes the historical and present ways in which people address God. The author expounds on a book which reads like a hymnal to help readers understand that Psalms offers the full scope of human circumstances. In addition to giving a deeper understanding of the book of Psalms, Fane Downs wrote the study to "teach us yet again about God and about ourselves."
