Living as Those Prepared to Die Of all of the apostles, Thomas holds a special place in my heart, and not just because I can sympathize with his doubting nature. Thomas reminds the other disciples that despite the risk of being put to death for being a follower of Jesus, there is no greater calling. He says to them, “‘Let us also go, that we may die with him’” (John 11:16). In a very real way, death is a solitary journey; even if two die side by side, their waning moments are theirs alone. But it is equally true that whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s (Romans 14:8), and if we are God’s, then the Body of Christ can and ought to stand with us.
