Dispatch from Forbearance Presbyterian Church
Humorous illustration of people in a van

Let the Good Times Roll!
by Charlotte Johnstone

When Janet Miller signed up to be one of the drivers for Forbearance Church’s contingent of women traveling across several states to a regional conference for Presbyterian Women, she couldn’t have known that her husband, suddenly called away on business, would wreck her careful plans for a three-day sojourn sans children and all her usual responsibilities. But then, after trying other solutions to no avail—grandparents and assorted babysitters—she resigned herself to taking her five children, all under the age of nine, with her and making the best of it, especially after she learned that child care would be available once they arrived. However, when she heard that Minnie Maleska and Chloe Makepeace would be her passengers, she began to have second thoughts.

After all, she thought, Minnie and Chloe, older women not steeped in the intricacies of transporting small bodies, might not appreciate what they were getting into. Cruise ship devotees who were fastidious by nature, Minnie and Chloe could not possibly have any idea what a long trip
in the Miller van entailed.
