It seems very easy for us to forget that Jesus, the Son of God, came to us as a child. We are always reminded of that at Christmas, yet during the rest of the year the significance of a child as the Savior is usually lost on most of us. During his adult ministry, Jesus welcomed children. He welcomed them in a time and place when children had little value and were easily ignored or dismissed. Yet, his welcome was more than a pat on the head, “How are you doing” type of greeting. Jesus stopped what he was doing, opened his arms, and embraced and blessed the children. This example of Jesus’ compassion for children is the grounding for faith-based child advocacy.

Embracing God’s World . . . Again

It’s a great big world out there. Although we know we are called to be involved in some kind of mission engagement, sometimes it is hard to know just where to begin. We know, as good Presbyterians, that the Great Ends of the Church direct us to be involved in the world through such lofty efforts as the proclamation of the gospel; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world.

Honoring the Multiple Ways of Learning

Most adult Bible study classes look and feel alike. That is, a teacher lectures while standing, perhaps behind a lectern, writes information on a board or newsprint sheet, asks students questions about the passage under scrutiny, and waits patiently, more or less, for answers.
