Professing Our Faith:
A Confirmation Curriculum

Sunday school teacher infront of her class.

Congregational Ministries Publishing has received a number of calls this year from those of you charged with planning and teaching Confirmation classes. We are, therefore, very glad to be able tell you that as of fall 2005 Professing Our Faith will join the We Believe line of survey courses to provide Presbyterian youth with a foundational understanding of our faith, tradition, and Presbyterian practices. The scope and sequence of the confirmation curriculum imitates the emphases of the Study Catechism (Confirmation version)1 as well as early church confessions such as the Heidelberg and Westminster Catechisms, in that it presents lessons that teach youth the biblical foundations and theology of the Apostles' Creed, the 10 Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer. Additionally, Professing Our Faith invites young people to explore the meaning of their baptism and their participation at the Lord's Table, as well as learn about church polity, stewardship, spiritual practices, worship and mission. The heart of the curriculum can be summarized in the answer to Q. 4 of the Study Catechism: By the Holy Spirit, I am made one with the Lord Jesus Christ. I am baptized into Christ's body, the church, along with all others who confess him by faith. As a member of this community, I trust in God's Word, share in the Lord's Supper, and turn to God constantly in prayer. As I grow in grace and knowledge, I am led to do the good works that God intends for my life.

One of the strengths of Professing Our Faith is its usefulness in a variety of contexts. For example, the Leader's Guide is designed with two different formats in view. The 35-session format also includes sessions for use at Christmas and Easter and is designed for use during the school year. A second format offers six sessions, which may be used as a stand-alone confirmation program or in conjunction with the longer curriculum option. Both the 35-session format and the eight-week format come with a unique Student Book that each participant can use and keep.   Profession Our Faith A Confirmation Curriculum

Even if you are not thinking about confirmation right now you may be interested in using Professing Our Faith because it offers such a strong background in teaching what we believe and what it means to belong to God and to the community of faith. The curriculum is suitable for use in educational settings other than confirmation and in contexts other than Church School.

The Leader's Pack includes a Teacher's Guide, a 35-session Student Book, a Student Book (six-week version), the Study Catechism: Confirmation Version and a set of twelve certificates of Confirmation. Additional copies of the 35-session and six-week session Student Books as well as the Study Catechism and certificates will be sold separately so that you can purchase one for each student as needed. The Teacher's Guide has the familiar We Believe lesson plan (A-B-C-D):

Assemble: God Calls Us Together
Belief: We Learn What Our Church Believes
Claim: We Live Out Our Faith
Depart: God Sends Us Into The World

The Beliefs section of the lesson varies from session to session, incorporating Bible study as well as learning about the catechism, our confessions, and our faith tradition.

The Rev. Meg Rift and the Rev. Eunice McGarrahan teamed up to write the curriculum. After serving for 5 years as the denomination's associate for POINT, Meg is now working from her Dallas, Texas home as a freelance writer and workshop leader. Eunice (better known as Junior) is an associate pastor at National Presbyterian Church in our nation's capital. Meg brings an incredible talent for developing lesson plans that are interactive and fun and yet maintain a strong focus on the main points of the lesson. Whether it is a game, a role-play, a discussion, or a craft, it points toward the biblical and theological truth the lesson is teaching.

Junior has been actively involved in youth ministry for over 30 years and has an amazing gift for putting deep theological understanding into words with examples that relate well to the experiences of today's young people. She is largely responsible for the "Teacher to Teacher" sections in the Leader's Guide and the "Did You Know?" sections in the Student Book. These sections provide the biblical and theological background for each week's lesson. Junior's experience and training give the curriculum its solid moorings in the Reformed tradition.
