  Real Faith Goes Hip-Hop

There I was, in New York City for the first time! Feeling more than a little overwhelmed by the size of the buildings and the crowd, I did my best to blend in as I walked along 42nd Street. Then the crowd stopped moving and I found myself peeking around shoulders to see what was going on. A group of five young men was setting up to perform. I settled in next to a building and watched an impressive display of dancing to Hip-Hop music. After a while I began to look at the crowd. Surrounding me were people of all ages, races, and economic status clapping to the beat and applauding the dancers. On that street corner was a microcosm of the Hip-Hop culture. The music, fashion, and philosophy of Hip-Hop have spread throughout our culture. Hip-Hop is no longer relegated to the street corner in large, urban settings. It can be found everywhere, even in the church.

In the summer offering of Real Faith, Real Life, authors Mark Lomax and Stephany Graham Jackson explore the spiritual and moral value of Hip-Hop music. Using Jesus and the Hip-Hop Generation, small groups will be encouraged to compare biblical perspectives of economics with the material values promoted through
the Hip-Hop culture.

There are many questions about being part of the Hip-Hop generation that this study will address. Is it possible for young adults to maintain the integrity of their Christian walk while identifying with a culture that expresses the rhythm of their unique generation?

Should Christians sacrifice culture in order to live holy lives, or is it possible to extract something spiritual from this emerging worldview? How does Jesus interact with the Hip-Hop Generation? Discuss these questions and many more in your small groups by studying Jesus and the Hip-Hop Generation.

The Real Faith, Real Life series of books is produced as part of the denominational curriculum of the PC(USA): We Believe: God’s Word for God’s People. New titles are printed quarterly. Each Bible study is designed to be useful in a variety of settings and can be completed in as few as six weekly, one-hour sessions. Consideration for the numerous demands on young adults’ time and resources and a desire to address issues of relevance are driving forces in the development of these Bible studies. Advance preparation is minimal, and much of the work is done in-session.
