Spanish Language Curriculum for Youth and Adults:
The Miracles, Power, and Caring of Jesus

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has for many years been successfully collaborating with the United Methodist Church and other denominations to develop curricula such as Bible Quest and The Present Word. Last year Congregational Ministries Publishing expanded the scope of that partnership to include curriculum in Spanish. A number of Presbyterian writers had already been participating in the creation of both Lecciones Cristianas and Lecciones Cristianas Para Jóvenes. Now Presbyterian editors will collaborate in the development of this popular curriculum to tailor it to the needs of Spanish-speaking members of the Inglesia Presbyteriana.

  Lecciones Cristianas Summer 2005

The summer quarter focuses on the theme of Christ. The study uses the three Synoptic Gospels as the guides for exploring Jesus’ life as portrayed in the Gospel of Mark, his ministry of teaching as told in the Gospel of Matthew, and his ministry of compassion as detailed in Luke’s Gospel.

Unit 1, “Jesus’ Life,” has four sessions drawn from the Gospel of Mark. Session one presents Jesus’ baptism and temptation as events that established his credentials and the direction of his ministry. The second session looks at miracles as a reflection of both Jesus’ power and his caring. Session three shows how Jesus’ ministry resulted in criticism so intense it eventually led to his trial and crucifixion. The fourth session proclaims God’s final victory in the resurrection.

Unit 2, “Jesus’ Ministry of Teaching,” has five sessions drawn from the Gospel of Matthew. The first two sessions explore teachings from the Sermon on the Mount. Session three examines parables as a teaching tool that both clarifies and conceals. Session four focuses on teachings and forgiveness. The fifth session, which deals with teachings on “the last days,” explores the relationship between God’s future and our present-day living.

Unit 3, “Jesus’ Ministry of Compassion,” has four sessions drawn from the Gospel of Luke. Session one shows how Jesus defined his ministry (and his messiahship) in terms of compassion. The second session looks at the two instances when Jesus healed others out of compassion. Session three challenges us to consider compassion in light of what it means to be and to recognize a neighbor. The final session explores issues of humility and hospitality, including how we view ourselves and how we respond to hospitality that others extend to us.
