  The Church’s Book

“We have a celebrity among us today.” These words were announced at the fall stated meeting of the Presbytery of Alaska. “If you turn to page 359 of the Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study located at the center of your table, you will find a story and photograph of our own elder Rosie Fay Raven/Frog.” The gathering participants cheered. Then they began asking for autographs. Hesitant at first, Rosie Fay entertained the requests and graciously signed the books of her fellow presbyters.

The scene at the meeting of the Presbytery of Alaska illustrates how the Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study, along with the Children’s Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study, are truly the church’s books. The Mission Yearbook is a collection of 365 stories of elders, pastors, youth groups, and missionaries who bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The Children’s Mission Yearbook follows a similar focus with fifty-two weeks instead of 365 days. Each week presents a two-page spread with two stories describing “Mission in the United States” and “Mission around the World.” Scripture, puzzles, activities, prayers, and suggestions accompany the stories in the Children’s Mission Yearbook, demonstrating what children can do to make a difference in the world.
Following is an excerpt from the 2006 Mission Yearbook depicting the work of elder Rosie Fay.

The small Tlingit village of Kake on Kupreanof Island southwest of Juneau is blessed with the giftedness and faithfulness of its elders. Elder Rosie Fay Raven/Frog has responded to God’s call to serve in a community that has experienced an overwhelming amount of death, loss, and economic depression over the past few years. Rosie is committed to visiting the many villagers in need of pastoral care. She takes young people with her as she cares for those in need and offers comfort to those who suffer. The youth are learning from her the ministry of hospitality that is essential to their Christian heritage and the Tlingit culture. Rosie is witnessing to the grace of God that is shared between young and old.
This story is also found on page 102 of the 2006 Children’s Mission Yearbook. Find out more about your Presbyterian family through the stories and photos in your Mission Yearbooks.
