For the past two summers Congregational Ministries Publishing has taken children, youth, and adults on a wonderful journey into Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) mission around the globe with the Around the World in 5 Days vacation Bible school series. This year we’re coming home to the U.S.A.

Paper cut out captain   Around the World in 5 Days: A Visit to the U.S.A. explores what it means to have a heart and mind for mission. We start with Matthew 28:18–20, the Great Commission: “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” Throughout the week we hear stories of people who are living out this call in their daily lives, right where they live, in their hometowns. Participants learn that being mission minded is about evangelism; it’s about hospitality; it’s about prayer; it’s about generosity; it’s about action.

Around the World in 5 Days: A Visit to the U.S.A. tells the stories of other people involved in mission work, but it is also intended to help you tell the mission story of your own congregation. Lessons and activities help you explore what your congregation is doing to fulfill Christ’s call for your lives; it leads you to take the Great Commission to heart and mind and act on what you learn together.

The Director’s Guide comes with everything you need to plan a successful week of vacation Bible school. But the people in your own congregation are your most important resource. What stories do they have to tell about how they have lived out Christ’s call for their lives? How are they living that call now?

Congregations of all sizes have written to tell us how they traveled around the world by plane and by train. They’ve sent us pictures and told us stories. Around the World in 5 Days: A Visit to the U.S.A. is a trip by boat and can be as simple or as involved as you’d like to make it. We provide the basics and you make it your own. All we ask is that you tell us what works and what doesn’t; tell us your stories of joy and sadness, of silliness and insight, so that we can learn from you what it means to be mission minded as we take this journey together.
