The Adult Quarterly, We Believe Spring 2006

Throughout the spring quarter of We Believe, adults will be looking at the meaning of the resurrection. Rather than looking at the resurrection of Jesus Christ only from the objective stance of something that happened to a certain unique person about two thousand years ago, this quarter presses participants to ponder the new reality this event brought into being. Writers Nancy Regensburger and Kay Huggins lead us through a journey that helps us make connections between the miracle that reversed the finality of death on the cross for Jesus and Christ’s Spirit that works in and through the world today, empowering believers to witness to our faith.

In this sense, we can say the resurrection of Jesus Christ continues today! Just as Jesus breathed his Spirit upon his first disciples as he commissioned them in ministry right before his ascension, the power of the resurrection gathers us in worship and sends us out in service to our Lord and Savior. This same power of the Spirit lives as we enjoy fellowship and study, as we support and nurture one another in faith, and as we reach out in evangelism to others.

Just as God brought faithful witness out of discouraged and frightened disciples, so too God has given us means to find courage in the midst of tough situations, comfort in times of sudden tragedy, and hope in the pits of seeming failure. Doubt and struggles are part of every life of faith. The sessions this spring will help participants discern how this same grace is present in their own lives as a gift that helps us face the reality of spiritual desolation for what it is, knowing that God does not abandon us even in this place.

Based on the consistency of resurrection power, we can trust that transformation rather than needless destruction will characterize the end of time. We can trust that the same renewal power is at work even now empowering good works and faithful responses in the faithful. Though we cannot ignore today’s warring madness, we can base our actions and responses to it on the eternal reconciliation of all things promised by God in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
