2004 Mission Yearbook for Prayer &
Study
A new commandment I give to you, that
you love one another.
(John 13:34)
It was at the Last Supper that Jesus said to his disciples,
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another.
The giving of the new commandment followed a spontaneous, unexpected
act of service, one that toppled any hint of privilege or hierarchy.
In the middle of the meal, Jesus took towel and basin and washed
the feet of his disciples. This vivid act of love showed his
disciples how the world was to recognize his followers.
With Jesus as their model, they were to reveal Gods great
love through their service to others. We also reveal that we
are Christs disciples when we follow the commandment to
love one another. It is the realization of Gods boundless
love for us, demonstrated in Christ, that motivates us to move
beyond thoughts and intentions to true service to others. This
attitude of selfless love for the other marks our mission.
Presbyterians are embarking on a five-year mission initiative
to spread the good news of the gospel at home and abroad through
church growth and international mission workers. As we focus
on mission in the 2004 edition of the Yearbook, we will explore
the many ways congregations are moving from interest in mission
to involvement in mission.
Every Presbyterian will benefit from reading this extensive
resource that includes a daily devotional guide, Scriptures,
hymn selections, a message from the Moderator, and information
about local and international mission efforts. The Yearbook
makes a great gift for conferees and new church members.
