All twenty-one of us were bone tired. We’d been all over Peru. Why did Hunter Farrell, our mission co-worker and friend, want us to get on a bus at 6:30 A.M. for yet another journey?

Once our bus could proceed no further down the valley, we forded a stream and began a hike up the sand hills to a mysterious sight the people wanted to show us. They were standing on top of the hills, waving Peruvian flags they had made. Our group, ranging in age from 15 to 73, hiked up to the gap in the hill to see the 2,400 acres of sand poised to spring to life with irrigation through the much anticipated canal.

The villagers had waited for our group of twenty-one from Broad St. Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio, so the site could be properly dedicated and appropriate thanks could be given. Since funding for the canal had been approved by the Presbyterian Self-Development of People Committee, we found ourselves representing 21/2 million Presbyterians. No wonder Hunter had been so insistent.

We proceeded to a one-room community building and were invited inside. On the table were a basket of pink sweetheart roses and two large boxes of tangelos. A village official said, “These oranges we grew ourselves, thanks to the money from the Presbyterians. We do not have much here, but this is the best we have, and we offer it to you.” With tears running down our faces, we assured him of our love, respect, and partnership with them. Together we shared the kind of communion we will remember always. We returned to the bus with gifts from the heart, hands, sweat, and faith of our brothers and sisters in Huacho, Peru.

All of this is possible because people in Peru have vision and implement that vision with the economic and faith support of others. This happens because mission co-workers Hunter and Ruth Farrell have formed a network of organizations in Peru, “Joining Hands [Against Poverty]” that offers opportunities for gathering, learning, determining resources, and networking to fight hunger. This happens because people like you and me drop our gifts in an offering basket, never knowing where they will go but trusting our representatives and the recipients to do it well. It works.

“Our congregation at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, was looking for a way to help in the aftermath of the Afghanistan upheaval when we saw information from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) about the children who needed supplies in order to go to school. A group of clever needleworkers made sturdy backpacks, and the congregation filled them with school supplies.

“Everyone got involved. We collected money to pay for desks and chairs made in Afghanistan and sent everything off to PDA for its staff to distribute. It made a difference to think that children who have never had a chance to go to school will be attending with our beautiful red and green backpacks. Each one has a note from the family that packed it wishing the child a great school year!”
