  An Advent Devotion

  When we light candles on an Advent wreath in worship during Advent we remember and prepare together for the coming Messiah. The Lighting of the Advent Candles liturgy found in the Book of Common Worship, page 165, guides our worship remembrance. This liturgy can also guide our involvement in our congregation’s Advent season plans.
When we hear together:

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ.

Advent means coming.

We are preparing ourselves for the days

When the nations shall beat their swords into plowshares,

And their spears into pruning hooks;

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

Neither shall they learn war anymore.

We hear what it means to prepare. This preparation is an active preparation, a time of active waiting. We are to do things. Doing things and being active is something we do well. Our days are filled with activity. We work at our jobs, take care of our families, run from place to place getting things done. While we are to prepare actively, we are not to prepare frantically. How do we know the difference?

The preparation described here is one with purpose. We are to prepare for days of peace, days when we learn war no more. Not learning war means that we are to learn something else. It means that there is an alternative, another thing to learn instead. Not learning war means learning peace. Learning peace means teaching peace in our congregations and being peaceful in our lives. A peaceful Advent season includes time to pray, time to be still, time to tell the story of the coming Messiah. How do we plan for an Advent season like this?

  A peaceful Advent season is a season when . . .
We plan times for congregations to be together that do not add to the frantic nature of life. If we have a meal together, we plan a simple menu of soup and fresh bread. If we have a program we plan one that allows for quiet time and peaceful reflection presented by leaders whose own demeanor communicates calm.

A peaceful Advent season
is a season when . . .

We provide opportunities for service in our communities during which people who see themselves as different from one another can come together to work toward a common goal.

A peaceful Advent season
is a season when . . .

A Christmas program and all the preparation that goes along with it contributes to the joy of telling the story and celebrates the varied gifts brought to the process by the participants.

A peaceful Advent season
is a season when . . .

We experience what it means to be actively peaceful and peacefully active.

  During a peaceful Advent season we learn together what it means when we hear:
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
Those who lived in a land of deep darkness,
On them light has shined.
Let us walk in the light of the Lord.
