Aah, church camp. In spite of the
mosquitos and the homesickness, people remember church camp as
a special time. Perhaps it was where they developed new skills
and more confidence, where they learned to swim, canoe, identify
a woodpecker, or find a constellation. They remember campfires,
smores, and something more, something deeper. Many people
made a commitment or recommitment to Jesus Christ at church camp.
Perhaps you know folks who refer to camp as a formative spiritual
experience.
February 23, 2003, is Camp and Conference Ministry Sunday. On
this Sunday you can join with other Presbyterians in celebrating
camp and conference centers, particularly the ones in your presbytery
or synod. This will be a prime opportunity for you to help your
congregation become better acquainted with camp and conference
centers in your area and with the programs they have to offer
for the coming year. Encourage people in your congregation to
take advantage of the facilities and participate in the camps
and programs. Make Camp and Conference Sunday an informative,
fun day.
How to Get Ready for Camp and Conference Sunday
- Have a conversation with the people from your local Presbyterian
camp. Find out what they do and what they offer so you can
tell others.
- Get brochures or other printed material with schedules and
costs. You will want to share this information.
- Learn about programs for adults. Find out what facilities
they can provide for adult or family retreats.
- Talk with the session about setting up a camp scholarship
fund. Be prepared on February 23 to announce the fund, how
it will be used, and how people can contribute to it.
- Consider scheduling a retreat at a camp or conference center.
This might be a retreat for the session, the Christian education
committee, youth, older adults, or the camp scholarship committee.
- Contact Ghost Ranch, Montreat, Stony Point, or all three
and request brochures and other information about their courses,
seminars, and events, or visit their Web sites (see below).
Make this information available to church members and encourage
them to attend an event at one of these national Presbyterian
conference centers.
- Get your packet of materials with ideas for Camp and Conference Sunday
and start planning. You may receive one from your local
Presbyterian Camp, or you can print out a copy from www.pccca.pcusa.org/ccsun03.htm.
